Overview
Bhasha Van, is an audio tour that beckons visitors to embrace the rich linguistic tapestry of India. This immersive tour is part of the serene forested surroundings of the Adivasi Academy at Tejgadh (Chhotaudepur, Gujarat). The project was envisioned as an extension of The People’s Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI), a groundbreaking linguistic survey that acknowledges a staggering 780 languages in India; many more than the 22 scheduled languages recognized by the Constitution of India. The audio tour leverages the 35,000-page survey published in 50 volumes to represent this unparalleled diversity.
The tour unfolds over a walk through a literal forest of languages, with shelters where the visitor will find cloth-bound manuscripts, ancient scrolls, and terracotta murals offer a visual and tactile connection to India’s diverse languages. Along the way, visitors make use of the tour to explore India’s linguistic diversity through audible language samples in the form of songs, poems, folktales, sayings and jokes drawn from different languages of India; ensuring visitors can hear ‘voices’ in different languages instead of simply reading about them.
The participatory tour allows visitors to contribute stories, recordings and other material in their mother tongue to the Academy’s archives at the end of the tour. With information on more than 100 Indian Languages, this Tour is available in English and Gujarati.
